【Coach's Column】Former Olympian Breakdown: Traditional Boxing vs. The Viral Pickleball Craze! Which is More Fun?

As a former Hong Kong Olympic boxing representative who transitioned into a full-time coach, my eyes have been glued almost exclusively to the boxing ring for the past eight years. But even coaches need to look up and see what’s happening in the rest of the world.

Lately, a newly popular sport has absolutely exploded across the US, Europe, and now Hong Kong. It’s gotten to the point where NBA billionaires like LeBron James and Kevin Durant are rushing to invest their money in it—yes, I’m talking about Pickleball.

Recently, quite a few students at the gym have asked me: “Coach, you’re so deep into hardcore boxing. What do you think of this Pickleball trend?”

Honestly, sports are sports, and each has its own unique appeal. Today, I’m going to use the analytical eye of a former Olympian to break this down in the most straightforward way possible. Let’s compare traditional Boxing with the emerging Pickleball across three main pillars: technique, the underlying storylines, and the business models that drive them!

▍I. Technical Comparison: Life-or-Death Distance vs. Casual Net Play

In the boxing world, we practice a highly precise art form; it is absolutely not a street brawl.

The Technical Core of Boxing: One Wrong Step Puts You in the Hospital

Back in my national team training camp days, the thing we spent the most time on wasn’t hitting the heavy bag as hard as possible—it was footwork and distance control. When facing an opponent bigger than you, you have to slip your head exactly the second they punch, then borrow their momentum to fire back a counter. This technique is built on an extremely high-risk premise: “If you dodge a fraction of a second too late, you get knocked out, or even sent to the hospital.” The technical barrier to entry in boxing is incredibly high, and you won’t survive without immense perseverance.

The Technical Core of Pickleball: Grandpa and Grandson Can Play Together

In contrast, Pickleball plays like a mash-up of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong. Its most unique feature is a no-volley zone near the net called “The Kitchen,” where you aren’t allowed to smash the ball out of the air.

The Coach’s Breakdown: Playing Pickleball doesn’t require you to take physical damage like a boxer. It relies heavily on hand-eye coordination and the finesse of the “soft game” at the net. Two players dinking the ball back and forth at the net is actually quite similar to two boxers probing each other at close range, waiting for the perfect moment to suddenly unleash a power shot (like suddenly firing a vicious uppercut).

The Barrier to Entry: Boxing is too grueling and intimidating, which scares away 99% of people. Pickleball, however, is incredibly accessible—a grandfather and his grandson can easily play a match together. This easy-to-learn nature is the absolute biggest reason behind its viral explosion.

▍II. The Narrative: The Poor Man's Comeback vs. The Middle-Class Weekend

For a sport to be wildly popular, it needs a compelling story behind it.

Boxing: The Epic Battle for a Better Future

Boxing has historically always been a poor man’s sport. From Mike Tyson’s origins as a street thug in Brownsville to Manny Pacquiao selling donuts on the streets of the Philippines, boxing sells an inspiring narrative of “changing your destiny with your own two hands.” Before a fight, the two boxers provoke and trash-talk each other, turning a sporting match into a dramatic “Good vs. Evil” war. Audiences are willing to pay for tickets just to see how two tough guys settle their grudges in the ring, making their own blood boil in the process.

Pickleball: Sunshine, Hashtags, and Socializing

Pickleball’s story belongs in a completely different universe. There are no blood feuds here; it’s all about “health, sunshine, and making friends.” During the pandemic, people wanted to exercise while maintaining a safe distance, and Pickleball seized the opportunity to rise. Its packaging is simple: work up a sweat, chat with friends, snap a photo, and post it on Instagram. Once celebrities and influencers started playing, the sport transformed into a “trending hashtag.” It doesn’t sell “bad blood”; it sells the “joy of playing together.”

▍III. The Business Model: The Century-Old Institution vs. The Tech Startup

To truly understand a sport, you have to look at how it makes money.

Boxing: Middle Eastern Money Breaking the Old Rules

The commercial world of traditional boxing is notoriously deep, murky, and chaotic. Several major sanctioning bodies (WBA, WBC, etc.) operate independently, crowning multiple champions. In the past, promotional companies were so protective of their “cash cow” fighters that mega-fights between top stars often took years of failed negotiations. Recently, however, Middle Eastern (Saudi Arabian) wealth has stepped in, using virtually unlimited funds to smash the old rules, finally making dream matchups like Usyk vs. Fury happen. But at the end of the day, boxing is still heavily reliant on Superstars to drive viewership and ticket revenue.

Pickleball: The Rich Man’s New Toy

In contrast, Pickleball’s business model looks exactly like a Silicon Valley tech startup. It has no century-long history; its professional leagues were essentially brute-forced into existence by wealthy investors throwing money at them. They adopted an American Football-style franchise model. A few years ago, buying a Major League Pickleball team might have cost $100,000; today, the valuation has skyrocketed into the tens of millions. However, it has one fatal flaw: while millions love playing it, TV ratings for watching it are abysmal. The reason is simple: it’s incredibly fun to play, but boring to sit and watch. It cannot provide the audience with the visual shock and visceral thrill of a boxing match.

▍IV. The Olympian's Verdict: Will Pickleball Replace Boxing?

As a boxing coach, I will make a bold statement right here:

“Pickleball is the fast food of the sports world—it wins because it’s easy to consume and everyone eats it. Boxing is the premium Wagyu beef of the sports world—it wins on irreplaceable thrill and viewing value.”

Many analysts point to Pickleball’s rapid growth and claim it will steal all the sponsorships in the sports industry. But I believe Pickleball will never replace combat sports like boxing.

  • Different Revenue Streams: Pickleball makes money by selling paddles and renting court time to regular people. Boxing makes money by selling $80 Pay-Per-View (PPV) broadcasts and $10,000 VIP ringside tickets to watch stars bleed.

  • Primal Human Desire: Buried deep in human DNA is a primal fascination with “combat.” When you watch a boxer get dropped by a devastating heavy punch, only to grit their teeth, climb back to their feet, and fight back to win—that soul-striking awe and emotional resonance is something a nice volley on a Pickleball court can never, ever replicate.

▍Conclusion: Find the Sport That Suits You

One is a ring filled with blood, sweat, discipline, and ultimate perseverance; the other is the park’s new darling, focused on relaxation and community fun.

For investors, Pickleball is undoubtedly a fantastic business. But for those who truly seek to break through their own limits and forge an indestructible mind and body, those three minutes inside the boxing ring remain the most irreplaceable proving ground on earth.

Next time you go to the park, take a moment to appreciate the Pickleball players. But if you want to pursue a deeper level of physical breakthrough and learn how to truly protect yourself, you are always welcome to find me at the boxing gym.
